Digital media has become a regular part of our everyday lives and we are using everything from iPads and other tablet devices, to mobile devices and apps, to older media platforms such as televisions and computers. Screens are playing a more prominent role in people’s lives than ever before and wherever we go, we are “surrounded by screens”. Many of us own at least one of each digital media device, and some of us have multiples of each.

Understanding the prevalence of media devices and technology, Ipsos, a global market research company, recently conducted an international survey that revealed that people are literally surrounded by screens and are very aware of that fact. Approximately 16,000 consumers from 20 countries were surveyed and 60% of them feel they are constantly looking at a screen of some type. The Statista chart below visually showcases the percentage of people in selected countries stating that they are “constantly looking at screens these days”.

If we are constantly surrounded by screens, then looking at them must lead to the use of apps. There are many factors influencing app usage and screen size may be one of the larger factors. In an article “bigger screen sizes lead to more app engagement”, Flurry (a mobile app analytics company recently acquired by Yahoo) released a report that shows that “phablet” sales have not just doubled over the past year, becoming 6 percent of the mobile devices installed base, but that app activity on phablets accounts for 11 percent of all app sessions.”
